CCTU July Chapter Mtg - Karin Miller on Zen Tankara
Karin Miller on Zen Tankara
Zen Tenkara grew organically from owner Karin Miller’s passion for the sport. When she relocated to Colorado from South Florida, her need to be on the water led her to fly fishing. Tenkara was the perfect tool for the small streams that were near her home. She was captivated with tenkara’s efficiency, simplicity and fun. And in 2012, Zen Tenkara was born. Karin’s curiosity and hunger for adventure fueled her desire to target bigger fish and test the limits of this fixed-line method of fly fishing. This is the driving force that has led Zen Tenkara to be the pioneer of American tenkara.
Today, Zen Tenkara/Zen Fly Fishing Gear is a Colorado company that designs, manufactures and sells a broad range of tenkara fly rods, lines and accessories. Zen is revolutionizing this fixed-line fly fishing method and is known for creating a “fusion” of traditional fly fishing and tenkara to target not only small traditional tenkara species but also large, powerful fish not typically associated with this ancient Japanese method. Karin Miller, who remains at the helm of Zen, has established a reputation for being innovative, being cutting edge and for pushing boundaries with her high-performance tenkara rods. Together, Karin and Zen Tenkara are defining American tenkara.
This month’s pre-meeting fly tying demonstration will be by CCTU’s own Mike Myers (no, not that one; but still worth watching). Mike is beginning to work the fly tying demonstration circuit here in Colorado and will be tying the Pliva Shuttlecock, the closest thing he knows to a Tenkara fly. The fly tying demonstration will begin at 6:00PM.
You’re sure to learn something by coming to the meeting early!

CCTU February Chapter Mtg - Restoring the Gill Trail
Restoring the Gill Trail after the Flash Flood in July
The Gill Trail is the trail that provides hiking access to the legendary Cheesman Canyon section of the South Platte River. The last time the trail was restored was from 1999-2006. And after the flash flood on July 31st, 2023, the trail is in even worse condition. This accelerated erosion has made the trail restoration even more critical in order to conserve the Gold Medal water that is Cheesman Canyon.
Our speakers, Bill Mangle of ERO Resources and Priscilla Marbaker of Tapis Associates, will discuss the current trail assessment, their findings, initial trail repair, and the upcoming pilot project.

Katrina Hettinger on the Grizzly Mine Restoration Project
Katrina is the Front Range Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Project Manager of the TU Western Water & Habitat Program. She will be speaking on the Grizzly Mine, which is located in the Souther Rocky Mountains in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. The mine is about six miles southwest of Silver Plume in Clear Creek County, Colorado at 10,800 feet. The project site resides within what was historically known as the Argentine Mining District and is adjacent to Grizzly Gulch in the Headwaters of Clear Creek. The mine operated from the early 1870s to the late 1950s, with the primary mineral production output consisting of silver, lead, and zinc.
Today, there are some 500,000 abandoned mines across the western U.S. Many of these AML sites chronically leak heavy metals and other toxic substances into streams and groundwater, degrading the environment and popular trout streams. In the western U.S., roughly 140,000 AML sites have been identified as posing physical or environmental hazards. TU is committed to protecting trout streams from adverse impacts associated with abandoned mines and has made giant strides to date in restoring impaired streams - one mine at a time.
This month’s pre-meeting demonstration will begin at 6:00PM. You’re sure to learn something by coming to the meeting early!
