River Water Sampling | Waterton Canyon - South Platte River
The “Colorado River Watch” program is an on-going volunteer water quality-monitoring program co-sponsored by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and the Colorado Watershed Assembly. It is designed to provide the CPW and the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission with high quality water ecosystem data for use in making or revising water quality standards.
River Watch began in the spring of 1989 with two-hour trainings at six schools along the Yampa River. The program began with two primary goals that remain steadfast today. First, to provide a hands-on experience for individuals to understand the value and function of the river ecosystem. Second, to collect quality aquatic ecosystem data over space and time to be used for the Clean Water Act and other water quality decision-making processes. Read the whole story about River Watch on the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website.
Several Colorado Trout Unlimited chapters have joined the program by collecting and analyzing water samples from designated sites by chapter. These samples are analyzed for pH, temperature, hardness, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen and heavy metals. Chapter members conduct the water sample analyses, except for the nutrient and heavy metal samples which are analyzed by an outside CDOW laboratory. Twice a year, during low water flow conditions – typically in the early spring and autumn – samples are collected for macro-invertebrates.
The most exciting part of River Watch is the annual Bug Hunt. Once a year we are requested to go out and collect macro invertebrate samples (aka: bugs!) from our water quality site. Basically it is "let's see what lives in the river this year". As fly fishers and fly tiers this is a lot of fun. The Cutthroat Chapter usually collects bugs in October or early November. The bugs are collected then sent to a lab to be identified and counted. Everyone is welcome to join in on this event. Watch for this year's event and come on out. Bring your camera, your bug books, your notebooks and your youthful curiosity.

CCTU May | Monthly Speaker Gathering
This month’s speaker is Justin Purdy!
Raised in Colorado’s rugged beauty, Justin Purdy discovered fly fishing in 2009 during a backpacking trip in the Gunnison Valley—and he’s been hooked ever since. Whether navigating mountain trails in his trusty Tacoma, exploring alpine lakes, or floating rivers, he finds both adventure and peace in the outdoors. Now a father of two, his greatest joy is passing that passion on to his daughters. Combining his background in marketing and design with a deep connection to Colorado’s waters, Justin aims to inspire others to experience the same sense of adventure, connection, and purpose he finds every time he steps into a river. He believes the best lessons in life happen outside, where patience, resilience, and respect for nature are earned, and that every cast is an opportunity to slow down and take in the moment. He is thankful for his role within Orvis as the Park Meadows Fishing Manager, where he can bring all these skills together and help new and seasoned anglers alike.
This month’s Fly Tying Demo is being lead by Mike Williams! His demo will include: soft hackles and intruder flies for trout spey.
With more than 30 years at the vise, Mike brings a unique blend of scientific insight and practical experience to fly tying. Mike focuses on the use of dubbing loops to create lifelike movement and durable bodies. Mike likes to work on adapting tried and true patters to modern jig-style flies that maximize performance in a variety of water conditions. Mike is a major advocate for the versatility of CDC feathers; any soft-hackle nymph and even streamers are amplified by the addition of CDC.
The fly tying demonstration will begin at 6:00PM. You’re sure to learn something by coming to the meeting early!

CCTU Annual holiday party
Celebrate the Chapter’s 2025 accomplishments by joining us for our holiday gathering where we will have a white elephant gift exchange, a silent auction and potluck.
Members, potential members, visitors and friends are all welcome!

White Elephant Gift Exchange begins at 6:30PM!
To participate in the White Elephant Gift Exchange: Bring a wrapped gift of $25 value or less. The total value does NOT include any flies that may be involved in the gift. Historically, gifts have a fishing-related theme, but this is not necessary. The sillier the gift, the more fun as it generates steals (of which there can only be a maximum of three steals per item).
Silent Auction info: There will be several items available for bidding like … and dozens of flies! Remember that all proceeds go to funding our many projects throughout the year!
Potluck info: Please bring your favorite dish to share - appetizer, main or side dishes.
Beverage info: CCTU will provide non-alcoholic beverages and you can purchase alcoholic beverages from the staff at Lone Tree Brewing Company.

Fly Fishing the San Juan River with the Cutthroat Chapter
The tailwater below the Navaho Dam provides a variety of fishing opportunities. The upper
stretch below the dam is midge fishing. Often in sizes as small as #26. The middle sections
have an opportunity to warm and are fished with a variety of mayflies. The selection depends
on the time of year. The sections below the “Quality Waters” are often fished with streamers
and other larger flies.
The Cutthroat Chapter fishing trip this year will be from Saturday, October 25 through
Thursday, October 30, 2025. Saturday and Thursday are travel days, but fishing on those days
is possible. The 4 days usually provide enough time to explorer the river. I will attempt to
organize carpools for anyone who wants to ride down with others. The drive to the village of
Navaho Dam, New Mexico usually takes 6.5 hours, depending on weather and road conditions.
I have reserved and paid for lodging in three VRBO rental homes. Each of the homes provides
full kitchens, multiple bathrooms, and bedrooms. Everyone will have their own bed and in some
cases their own rooms. I ask for a deposit of $150 to reserve your place on the trip. The
balance will be due on August 15, 2025.The balance of the lodging cost will be determined
when I get a final number of participants. House assignments will be made prior to the trip.
You may view the rental properties using these links.
“Big House” https://www.vrbo.com/3960843ha
“River House” https://www.vrbo.com/221986
“Cliff House” https://www.vrbo.com/499076
It has been a tradition for the crew to eat dinners together. We can enjoy a great meal and
share experiences of the day. Each house will have a night to host, prepare, and clean up a
dinner. This will free up everyone else to sit back and relax after a day of fishing. BBQ grills
and full kitchens are available at all of the houses. Some of our previous dinners have included:
Tri-tip steak, burritos with green chili, lasagna, brats and burgers. Saturday is a travel day and
people will be arriving at different times. That said, you will need to prepare your own or go out
for dinner on Saturday night. Wednesday night’s dinner will be left overs from the previous 3
nights.
The fishing on the San Juan can best be described by some of the local fly shops. Fisheads
has a website and guide service at this link. https://www.fisheadsofthesanjuan.com/san-juanriver-fishing-reports/
Another shop that provides fishing reports is Duranglers. https://duranglers.com/san-juan-riverfishing?srsltid=AfmBOorzS6g0AcTm8vViDlahEytmgS6neiSUSDJ-mW6Lpal2k9YSeiCA
Fishing licenses can be purchased on line. https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us/
If you have any other questions, email me at gsshin51@gmail.com or call me at 303-507-3495
I hope you join us to experience some great and challenging fly fishing.
