CCTU OCTOBER CHAPTER MEETING – VIRTUAL MEETING VIA ZOOM
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 7PM
PROGRAM 1 – AUDREY HARRIS, STEVE BAILEY FELLOWSHIP RECEIPIENT, M.S. STUDENT, CSU DEPT OF FISH, WILDLIFE & CONSERVATION BIOLOGY
Audrey is this year’s recipient of the CCTU Steve Bailey Memorial Fellowship and a master’s candidate in the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology at Colorado State. She will speak on her master’s research on “Assisting greenback cutthroat trout recovery using an unlikely tool - brook trout genetics”.
The Poudre Headwaters Project represents the most important recovery effort of the greenback cutthroat trout, which is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Brook trout are currently the dominant species in the area, and their genetic signatures can tell us about fish movement between streams, barriers in the study area, and what environmental variables influence movement. This information will provide scientific support for the Poudre Headwaters Project, helping guide brook trout removal efforts and ensuring successful greenback cutthroat trout reintroduction.
PROGRAM 2 – RON BELAK, 800 HIGH LAKES IN COLORADO – RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHERE TO FISH
Noted Evergreen author and photographer Ron Belak will present a slideshow entitled “800 High Lakes in Colorado - Recommendations on Where to Fish.” His presentation uses materials from his recently released book entitled “The Fishing Guide to 800 High Lakes in Colorado” (BookBaby, 2021) and will cover lakes in the Front Range, Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Mesa, Central Mountains and Weminuche Wilderness. Some of these lakes are accessible by passenger vehicles while others require easy to moderate day hikes. Of course, Ron will include a few kick-ass locations for the more adventurous. Ron is also the author of the book entitled “Fly Fishing Colorado’s Backcountry” (BookBaby, 2018), which consists of 42 how-to articles he originally published in Colorado Outdoors Magazine. While aimed primarily at the backcountry angler, half of the articles in the book are applicable to fly fishing for trout anywhere. Ron’s books will be available at the presentation - $35 and $40 including tax. Ron accepts checks and cash (no credit cards), or order his books at www.ronbelak.com.
Ron Belak is an award-winning writer and photographer from Evergreen, Colorado. He has fished the Colorado backcountry as an adult for over 40 years, visiting about 600 high lakes during that time. Educated as a scientist with degrees in geology and significant coursework in the biological sciences, he approaches fly fishing from an analytical perspective, trying to decide what strategies, techniques, equipment and patterns work and what is the scientific basis for why they work. In addition to writing for Colorado Outdoors for more than 25 years, Ron’s writing has also appeared in Fly Fisherman and American Angler.
