PROGRAM 1 - DAVID NICKUM CTU EXEC DIRECTOR “COLORADO TU IN 30 MINUTES OR LESS”
If you’ve wondered what Colorado Trout Unlimited is doing on behalf of you and other members around the state, here’s your chance to get that picture in a nutshell. David will give a high-level overview of CTU’s efforts in four Good Samaritan projects for remediation of abandoned mining properties.mission priority areas identified by the state board.: promoting healthy rivers under Colorado’s Water Plan, restoring strongholds for native trout, legislative advocacy for clean water and instream flow, and educating and engaging the next generation of young angler/conservationists.
David has worked with National and Colorado Trout Unlimited for a combined 25 years. Under his leadership, Colorado TU has successfully reformed state whirling disease policy, secured passage of legislation strengthening Colorado's in-stream flow program, and conducted many on-the-ground restoration projects for stream habitat and native trout recovery. A graduate of Duke University, he enjoys fishing in the Rocky Mountain National Park area on both sides of the Divide, as well as hiking and camping in Colorado’s high country with his wife and two children.
PROGRAM 2 – TY CHURCHWELL TU “GOOD SAMARITAN LEGISLATION & ANIMAS SUPERFUND CLEAN-UP UPDATE”
Ty Churchwell will help us understand what has become a hot topic - Good Samaritan projects for the remediation of abandoned mining properties. He will talk their history and background, how abandoned mines impact water quality and fisheries, and the legal quagmire with the Clean Water Act/CERCLA. He will also update us on the Animas Superfund Clean-up efforts and TU’s path forward in both areas.
Ty Churchwell is national TU’s San Juan Mountains Coordinator and the Mining Coordinator for TU’s “Sportsmen’s Conservation Project (SCP) and based in Durango. Ty joined TU staff in 2008 after having been in chapter leadership with the Five Rivers chapter in Durango. He works primarily on state and federal mining policy while leading TU’s involvement in the Superfund cleanup of mines in the Animas River watershed.
