CCTU BEAR CREEK EARTH DAY CONSERVATION PROJECT - BEAR CREEK GREENBELT PARK

  • Bear Creek Greenbelt Park 2900 South Estes Street Lakewood, CO, 80227 United States (map)

Call for Volunteers for a Conservation Project on April 24.

Cutthroat Chapter TU Conservation Projects are Back!  Join us for an Earth Day Conservation Celebration with the City of Lakewood on Saturday April 24, 2021.

2020 was a difficult year with COVID-19 worries cancelling most of our CCTU events. We are pleased to announce that CCTU has begun conservation projects in 2021 with proper precautions in mind. CCTU is cooperating with the staff of Bear Creek Lake Park to help restore the Bear Creek Greenbelt riparian environment in Lakewood. The part of their Earth Day event we are helping with is only open to CCTU members and friends.  We will be planting native plants like chokecherry, native plum, and small cottonwood trees, in a 100% outdoor event.

We are calling for twenty volunteers that can meet the following requirements. If you would be willing to help, please contact George Franklin at 303.902.9827 or at georgefr@aol.com.  You must sign up in advance with George in order to participate.

  • We will meet at 7:55 am on Saturday April 24 at The Stone House, 2900 S. Estes St., Lakewood, CO 80227 (Bear Creek Greenbelt Park).  The event ends at 12 noon.

  • We will not have breakfast items or drinks provided, so bring your own if you so desire.

  • We will split quickly into groups of no more than 10, family member groups preferred.

  • We will have a “grab and go” lunch option at 12 noon, and then we will disperse.

  • There will be no fishing contest as in years past, but you are encouraged to stay and fish Bear Creek while maintaining an appropriate social distance.

Covid safety details:

  • Volunteers will be split into groups of no more than 10.

  • Volunteers will work with only the Park provided tool they select throughout the project. No tool trading with other volunteers. Volunteers are highly encouraged to bring their own tools instead. Picks, shovels, and rakes are recommended for the very rocky soils.

  • Volunteers must bring their own masks.  Masks cannot be handkerchiefs or single layer neck gaitors, but rather must be legitimate masks worn correctly over mouth and nose. Masks only need to be worn if a distance of 6’ or more cannot be maintained between park staff and/or volunteers that are not part of your family group. Bring your own hand sanitizer.

  • We will not have any type of gathering. Volunteers will be immediately sent to their workgroup and will move out as soon as there are enough people.

  • Volunteers are asked to grab lunch and disperse following the event.
