What is the connection between Cancer and Flyfishing?
The answer is "Reel Recovery"! (updated March 9, 2010 )
Reel Recovery is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. It was established in 2003, with many of its founders Cutthroat Chapter of TU members. In addition, Reel Recovery has recognized the Cutthroat Chapter as an “Outstanding Partner.”
Cutthroat members on Reel Recovery’s Board of Directors or Advisory Board; retreat fishing buddy volunteers; or, equipment/auction item donors, tied flies, or provided monetary donations include:
Jim Cloud, Coy Theobalt, Kent Higgins, John Betts, Mark & Sharon Lance, Bob Hilton, Chris Berry, Richard Mead, Richard Pilatzke, Bob Churchill, Ross Custer, Harry Hall, Cathy & Doug Houser, Ken & Anna McClatchy, Rick Webb, Jack Keenan, & Van Bliss - to mention a few.
For 2010 year, Reel Recovery will offer 16 or more, 2 ½-day retreats (12-men dealing with or cancer survivors per retreat) with all-expenses paid for the participants.
Two retreats will be in Colorado, one at the Sylvan Dale Ranch, near Loveland (May 5-7) and the other at the Peace Ranch near Basalt (June 11-13). A third retreat is TBD. As funding becomes available, Reel Recovery continues to expand its service areas, which currently involve twelve states:
Colorado, Utah, Montana, Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and New York.
If you personally know someone facing life-threatening cancer and believe they would benefit from a Reel Recovery retreat, please have them visit their website http://www.reelrecovery.org or have them call 1-800-699-4490 for more information.
If you can contribute to or attend an auction, tie flies to support a retreat, volunteer as a fishing buddy for a retreat participant for a ½ or full-day on-site, or provide assistance and support in others ways, please go to their website to the “HOW TO HELP” selection and click on “donate,” “supporters,” or “volunteer” and fill out the requested information.
Spoken so fondly by our many participants -- “Be Well – Fish On!”
